Off-Grid Systems

Off-Grid Solar Systems

Complete standalone power for properties beyond the grid, or where a connection quote costs more than independence. Designed, installed and supported by the same Hunter Valley family.

Off-grid ground-mount solar array with inverter and battery cabinets on a rural NSW property

An off-grid system is a small power station for one property: solar to generate, a battery bank to store, an inverter to run the house, and a generator to cover the week the weather doesn't cooperate. Get the sizing right and you forget it's there. Get it wrong and you're running the generator every winter evening. We're SAA accredited for Stand-Alone Power Systems and it's the work we've built the business on.

Who goes off-grid

New builds with no grid nearby

When the network quote to bring power up the driveway runs to tens of thousands of dollars, a standalone system is often cheaper, and you own it outright. Common around Wollombi, Broke, the Central Coast plateau and the Central West.

Rural blocks and acreage

Homesteads, weekenders and lifestyle properties that want the house, pumps, freezers and workshop to run regardless of what the network is doing.

Sheds, bores and outbuildings

You're on the grid at the house, but the shed or the bore pump is 400 metres away. A small standalone system beats trenching cable.

Fed up with the grid

Long outages, storm damage, bills that keep climbing. Some customers cut the cord. Others keep the connection but build a system that could run without it. We'll tell you honestly which makes sense.

How we design an off-grid system

Load audit

What actually runs, when, and what surges on start-up. Pumps, welders, air-con and cool rooms decide the inverter size, not the number of bedrooms.

Solar and autonomy

We size the array for winter, not summer, and the battery bank for the number of cloudy days you want to ride through before the generator starts.

Battery bank

LFP chemistry only, from brands with Australian service backing: Pylontech, PowerPlus Energy, Deye. Sized for days of autonomy, not hours.

Inverter and generator

Selectronic or Victron at the heart, often with Fronius AC-coupled for the solar. A Himoinsa diesel set on auto-start covers the worst week of weather.

Install and commission

Our own crew of licensed electricians, proper enclosures, and a full commissioning test before we hand over.

Handover and support

We walk you through how the system runs, what the generator does and what to keep an eye on. After that, you call the same family that installed it.

The gear we build with

Selectronic SP PRO off-grid inverter

Off-grid inverters

Selectronic · Victron · Deye · Fronius

The heart of the system. Selectronic is our default for jobs that absolutely have to keep running. Victron when the site needs something bent to fit. Fronius AC-coupled for serious solar input. Deye when budget matters.

Pylontech rack-mount LFP off-grid battery

Off-grid batteries

Pylontech · PowerPlus Energy · Deye

Off-grid banks cycle hard every day and hold through cloudy stretches. We only fit LFP chemistries with proven Australian service, and we size for days of autonomy rather than a brochure number.

Himoinsa diesel backup generator

Backup generators

Himoinsa diesel, auto-start

On a well-sized system the generator runs a handful of hours a year. When it does, it has to start first time. We fit Himoinsa exclusively, integrated with the inverter so it starts and stops itself.

Common questions

Do I still need a generator?

Almost always yes. A generator is cheap insurance compared with oversizing the battery bank to cover the once-a-year worst case. On a properly sized system it barely runs, but on the day you need it, you really need it.

What does an off-grid system cost?

It depends on your loads and how many cloudy days you want covered, not on the size of the house. The honest comparison is against the network connection quote and the bills you'll never pay. We'll give you a written design and a fixed price after a site visit.

Can I go off-grid if I already have power?

Yes. Some customers disconnect entirely. Others keep the grid as a backup and run a system that could stand alone. We'll tell you which one makes sense for your bill, your loads and your patience for generators.

Can you upgrade an existing off-grid system?

Yes. Tired battery banks, ageing inverters, adding solar or a generator to a system someone else installed: we service and upgrade off-grid systems we didn't put in.

Where do you install off-grid systems?

Right across the Hunter Valley and Upper Hunter, the Central Coast, and the Central West around Mudgee, Bathurst, Orange and Dubbo. If your property isn't on the list, ask.

Where we work

Where we install off-grid systems

Off-grid country for us means the Wollombi and Congewai valleys, Broke and Bulga, the Upper Hunter around Denman and Sandy Hollow, the Central Coast plateau, and the Central West from the Bylong Valley out to Orange. Pick your area to see what we typically do there.

Somewhere else? See all the areas we cover or just ask.

Thinking about going off-grid?

Tell us where the property is and roughly what you need to run. We'll come out, look at the site, and give you a written design and a fixed price.
